Freih looks around the room... "Hey! 10k, Cyrus, Moritaka, Iain7.... and Rise! Actually, Alydar, too... While we're waiting for the next game doing nothing, why don't I sign you up for a little quick game?" He doesn't wait for an answer. "OK. I will. Since you don't have to pay anything for this, you're free to just ignore the game if you don't wish to play. Now - here's how it will work..." Number gameGameplay:Everyone describes to the dealer, Freih, a real number via PM. To describe a number, you could name a number, but you could also define it in some other way. For example, you could send any of these: 1) "My number is 10^999999." - If you send that, you will get ranked (see later). 2) "My number is twice 10k's number." - If you send that, you may or may not get ranked. 3) "My number is infinity." - If you send that, you will not get ranked. If your message defines a unique real number, you get ranked with the number defined in the message. However, if your description does not define a unique existing number, you don't get ranked. Thus, the person who sent 1) will always get rank and have a number 10^999999. Now, 2) is more complicated. If 10k himself sent 2), then he would get ranked with the number 0. Else, if 10k is ranked with some number, then the person who sent 2 would also get ranked, with twice that number. Otherwise, the person who sent 2) doesn't get ranked, as their number can't be determined. Since infinity is not a real number, the person who sent 3) doesn't get ranked. Anyone inactive gets ranked with -1. The dealer, Freih, is always ranked with a 0 (so that inactive people would never win). The player ranked with the largest number wins!ImplementationThe game starts at the time of this post, and you have 24 hours to send me your number. After that, I will post here everyone's number description, and announce the results. At that time, another game will immediately start if there were at least two active people in the last game, and you will have another 24 hours to send in another number if you wish to play again. If someone not signed up would like to play, feel free to send me a number description and I'll simply add you in . Notice: Game taken from another online forum.

Freih steps fourth, holding three envelopes: "Well, let's see what these contain now."
First, signed "Alydar": "I send in one higher than the highest-ranked number in the game." Freih laughs... "Obviously, a number larger than the largest ranked number would not be ranked. Sorry, Alydar."
Note: I'm indeed sorry, I know you meant something different. Normally, I would have used what you meant instead of what you wrote. However, since specific wording in this game may be very important, I have to stick to it even when it's obviously not what you meant. Anyway, if not for that little detail, you would have won this round, as nobody else sent the same.
Then, Freih opened Iain7's envelope and read: "I'll say my number is quadruple the sum of everyone else's number." - thinks for a while - "Well, unfortunately since Alydar's number does not exist, your doesn't seem to exist either. Anyway, even if we leave Alydar aside, the sum of the other numbers is -3, so you get -12 (unless by quadruple you meant raising to power 4)"
Finally, Freih opens the envelope signed by Rise... "WHAT? But that's just a.... a ZERO?". Indeed, Rise's envelope contains a piece of paper with a zero on it, and nothing else....
Thus, Rise ties with the dealer for the first place by being ranked with the number 0!
Since I received three replies, I another game of Number Race starts at the time of this post. Those who wish to participate, PM me your number in the next 24 hours. Everyone else will receive a ranked number -1. Now that you've seen how it works, let's hope the second one will proceed more smoothly.

Edit: how many rounds are we playing? I will be holding rounds as long as people participate or until Liar's Memory starts, whichever comes sooner. Feel free to PM me a number or description in the next ~21 hours if you want to join.

Anyway, if not for that little detail, you would have won this round, as nobody else sent the same. I understood it as numbers sent in could be one of the following: "ranked," "maybe ranked," or "not ranked." Thus, mine was in the "maybe ranked" category as 1 higher than the highest "ranked" number. Should I have said "highest-ranked-number" instead? Or "highest ranked-number?" I would have given greater clarification/specificity if it had been asked for, but as it wasn't, I figured it was understood and acceptable.

The thing is, if your number was ranked, then how can it be one more than the highest ranked number in the game, considering it itself is a ranked number. There are two possibilities: 1) Your number is the highet ranked. Then your number must be one more than your number, a contradiction. 2) Your number is not the highest ranked. Then there is a ranked number larger than your. Then your number must be onemore than a number larger than your number, also a contradiction. Thus a number as described by you doesn't exist. So I believe you meant "one more than the maximual ranked number other than mine", which would not be "the highest-ranked" if yours is the highest ranked.

"The second Number Race game is now over," said Freih, holding two envelopes. The first, signed by 10k, said: "My number is 751". So 751 his number is. Then,. an envelope by Rise: "If possible, you should learn from others' mistakes, Rise, instead of repeating them. If you had said "+1 of the highest number in play BUT MINE", you would have been the winner with 752! However, clearly, the number "+1 of the highest number in play" is more than the highest number in play. And, of course, any number larger than the highest number in play is NOT in play, simply because it is larger than the highest number in play. The same mistake Alydar made last round... So your choice defaults to zero for a tied second place wit the dealer . Since at least two people participated, a THIRD NUMBER RACE starts now. You have 24 hours of the time of this post to send in your numbers!

I have a message from Alydar concerning the confusions, and it seems I do need to make some further clarifications.
When you send in a number, there are two possibilities: 1) If your message defines a unique real number, you get ranked with the number defined in your message. 2) If your message does not define a unique real number, you don't get ranked.
I also clarified wording in the original post.

"We're finally getting serious here, heh?", said Freih, holding three envelopes, signed by Alydar, 10k, and Cyrus. "Rise, no input from you this time? And I was willing to bet you'd win this round... Well, let's start with Alydar's envelope."
Freih then proceeds with 10k's letter:
Finally, the one signed "Cyrus"
"Clearly, Alydar's number is 999^(999^(999^(999^(999)))), otherwise it would conflict with both 10k and Cyrus and result in an unranked number.
Now, let's see Cyrus's message. In there, B=1, C=1, D=1, and E=999^(999^(999^(999^(999)))) - the numbers sent by (or assigned to) Moritaka, Iain7, Rise and Alydar respectively. But what about A and 10k's number?
Suppose 10k is ranked. Then Cyrus's E=abs(10k's number), but then Cyrus's number becomes larger than 10k's and both fail, a contradiction with 10k's condition. If 10k is unranked, then A=1,000,000.
Thus Cyrus wins with (999^(999^(999^(999^(999))))+1+1+1+1,000,000+1,000,000)*1,000,000 Alydar is second with 999^(999^(999^(999^(999)))) 10k fails to rank.
Since 3 people participated, a FOURTH GAME will start now, and you'll have 24 hours as of the time of this post to send me your number definitions. Sorry for the delay this time, Cyrus's post came late and it took me time to make sure his number does indeed rank, and I also had some IRL work to do.

Alright, well I did what I was interested in doing in this game, so I'm done for now. My main purpose was so that you guys would have a template to work off of if you wanted to. I'm a little embarrassed that with all that preparation I didn't even think to use exponents instead of multiplying by 1,000,000. But I'm also fairly certain that (thanks to if statements) the template will always rank, if not win.
The interesting thing about this game is that it's a sort of arms race, where every side just has to outphrase the competitors. Anyway, if anyone likes that god-awful run on sentence I entered, feel free to use it, and I will award bonus points if anyone is extra amazing and adds another iteration of the template within the template itself. Just remember, regardless of who has the highest number in a round, the person who wrote the most painful to read submission is the real winner!

"My number is 1," said a note Freih took from an envelope signed by 10k.
"My number is e ^ (i * π) + 11." said Alydar's note, giving him a 10+0i, which is complex, while I needed real. Oh, well, it's real as well as complex, so Alydar wins with a ranked number of 10.
Since two people participated, a FIFTH NUMBER RACE starts now. You have 24 hours to send in your next number... But while I will be holding the games while at least two players participate, a third would make the game a lot more interesting. Come on and join...

Freih looks around, holding four envelopes. He carefully lines them on top of each other and with a swift movement cuts them open simultaneously. Then simultaneously pulls out a piece of paper from each envelope and shows the four pieces to everyone.
The first, signed... No, it's not signed - it's completely empty. And so are the rest three.
"No participating anymore, huh? Well, I understand - this game is not for two only. Anyway, Liar's Recollection is also approaching, so let's end this now. Congratulations to all the winners!"
Since nobody participated this time, I will not be holding any more number races, unless someone asks me to.
PS:
It is not true that the template always ranks, even if doesn't win. In fact, it's fairly obvious that if Cyrus's template ranks, it would win: the number generated by the message he suggested is always higher than all ranked numbers. But it doesn't always rank. if someone had sent a message "If Cyrus is ranked, then my number is one more than his, otherwise it's 1." both these messages would have failed to rank.
