Okay, I read through, and I’m wondering if you guys are ignoring my red sentence: the only real winning strategy is to minimize the range you're willing to agree for a shot, which then escalates into a deadlock.
So, I’ll reply in light of this.
@liargame: Yes, the changes make it a different game. It HAS to be a different game because in its current format, 1v1 for 2p does not work. Some things just can’t hack it, as I’m sure you noticed by looking at my confessional for a proposed minigame or two. In my ideal version here, betting is meant to go with the shot averaging and then move on to the next target, (although I'm also considering rewarding for a "certain type" of deviation from 50/51, "betting" being only the first mechanic considered). Anyway, there's zero negotiation, but the game as a 2p 1v1 isn't suited for it. Instead, I'm aiming for a game of pure psychology. You want "negotiation" in a 1v1 game, I say play poker and draw analogies, like agreeing on the terms to see a flop in Hold'em.
Forcing a round until a number is agreed upon? NO. For the same reason certain games are destined to end in a draw if both sides are rational, the same thing is going to happen here with your suggested revision. It doesn't fix the deadlock problem. I’d rather stop with a draw than give the opponent a win or advantage (remember Freih’s and my Infiltration Game?). You saw it this round; it’ll be the same story most rounds.
Freih: I haven’t suggested numbers because that’s not my style. It’s slower, sure, but I figure it gives me a decent advantage because: 1) You could suggest a number next door to mine or even my own target, and I can agree on the pretense of “Hmm…sure, it’s far but I guess I’ll risk it.” And if that’s the case, it’s 2) impossible for you to backpedal…well, you can, but that sort of defeats the purpose of proposing in the first place. Wait-and-react is by far the safer move, I reduce the risk of falling into any traps, and there’s nothing stopping me from waiting until the planets manage to align. Obviously, by the time I agree to anything the proposer becomes suspicious.
I guarantee you we’ll be burning through set-up phases if nothing changes. Why, we’ll get more compromising done agreeing on a revision than playing the game!
If you guys don’t like my revisions, then you have to figure out a way to force me into making a move at a marginal situation. You can’t bring a clock because I can just call for a mulligan and it’s unfair to say “you’re being a stubborn mule about strategy, Freih wins” while I complain that “Freih’s just picking awful numbers.”
